SF and fantasy fans have often heard the phrase “bug-eyed monster” or its acronym “BEM”. I hereby present what I believe to be the very first example: it is the front cover of the August 1936 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories.
Well, here it is:
It is an illustration of a scene in a novellette called “The Land Where Time Stood Still” by one Arthur Leo Zagat. The creature, incidently, was meant to be a member of a species descended from Home Sapiens – a post-human in modern parlance.
