Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine was one of a number of new science fiction magazines that appeared in the late 70s. It is the only one currently being published. There are a number of factors that likely contributed to this success.
First, Asimov’s name was probably a selling point. However, he was not involved in day to day editorial decisions (those being undertaken by former fanzine editor George Scithers). He did write the magazine editorial and was listed as editorial director.
Second, the edotorial team had previous experience in publishing and fandom.
Third, the publishers (Davis Publications) were already publishing Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine so alreay had a distribution network in place.
The magazine was quarterly in 1977, bi-monthly in 1978 and monthly in 1979. Monthly publication (4-weekly for a period during the 1980s) was maintained until 1996.
